The primary purpose of ECDIS-N was to transition U.S. Navy vessels from paper charts to an electronic format, to aid in the safety of navigation when coupled with continuous, automated positioning systems and ship controls, eliminating the constraining aspects of paper navigation. Today, most U.S. Navy ships and submarines are installed with a version of ECDIS, each configuration based on the ship’s design and overall mission of each ship class. Training topics include electronic charting, configuration and design, component integration, and Voyage Management System user operations.
